Petty Enterprises denies merger rumor

A busy week in New York City culminated Friday evening with the annual NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony at the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel.
Jimmie Johnson, who etched his name in the NASCAR record books by becoming only the second driver in the sport’s history to win three consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championships, was officially coronated as the 2008 series titlist.

1914: Bill Cantrell, a member of the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame, is born on this day in Mount Vernon, Mo. Cantrell, nicknamed the "Silver Fox," won more than 120 main events in a variety of series from 1945 through 1964. He competed in two NASCAR races, both road courses, finishing 14th at Willow Springs Speedway in Lancaster, Calif., in 1956, and 39th at Riverside in 1965.
