ROUND THREE
Roush battle to resume at Kansas
By Charles Krall, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, September 28

Last year was rough on Greg Biffle. Maybe not 20 miles of bad road rough, but it was arguably his most challenging year since his rookie season in the Sprint Cup Series in 2003.

In this Jan. 24, 2008 file photo, NASCAR team owner Jack Roush speaks during the NASCAR Sprint Cup Media Tour in Concord, N.C. Jack Roush tries not to think about 2005 when he placed five cars in the Chase field and came away without a championship. Three years later, Roush has three — and they're off to a great start.

He missed the Chase for the second consecutive year, and he waited until September to score his first win of the year at Kansas Speedway. All told, he scored only five top-five finishes all season and led just 78 laps.

This year, he returns to Kansas for today's Camping World RV 400 as the defending race winner on a two-race win streak after victories at New Hampshire and Dover. He also sits in a tie with Jimmie Johnson for second in the series standings, just 10 points behind teammate Carl Edwards.

Biffle is the first driver to open the Chase with two consecutive wins, which has him in position to become the first driver to win a title in all three of NASCAR's top three series. He won the Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2000 and followed it with a Nationwide title in 2002.

"We've worked extremely hard to get our cars and our team where they need to be," Biffle said. "I guess if you want to use the term 'peak at the right time,' you could. I feel we have worked hard all season and now our hard work is starting to show up. I feel a lot better about this championship run than I did in 2005."

By Reid Spencer, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, September 28

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The violation that cost Juan Pablo Montoya the pole for Sunday's race at Kansas was a clear-cut infraction of NASCAR's rules, but it wasn't likely to have given the No. 42 Dodge a performance advantage.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Denny Hamlin held off Nationwide Series points leader Clint Bowyer to win Saturday's Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway, but Bowyer extended his margin in the standings over his two closest pursuers.
