Working the field
INSIDE TODAY'S ISSUE: |
By Ed Hinton Orlando Sentinal,June 30, 2002 A Saturday night short-track promoter would put a bounty on Dale Earnhardt Jr., a big bonus to anyone who could beat the ace on his home asphalt. Earnhardt, 27, the MTV-generation icon and best-selling author -- who also happens to be the best restrictor-plate racer alive -- has won three of the past four "plate" races. He could easily have been four-for-four. In the Feb. 17 Daytona 500, he contended in a wrecked car, roaring back through the field with a front fender ripped open and flopping, until he was caught up in another wreck. So Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway, when he goes into the Pepsi 400 as defending champion, maybe Winston should relax the rules for its "No Bull" bonus so that the $1 million goes to any of the 42 other drivers who can beat Earnhardt.
He's so good at it that he freely offers advice on how to beat him: "Break up that teammate tandem" of him and Michael Waltrip.
Kurt Busch has been there, tried that. Still, Roush Racing's prodigy finished a hard-earned third to Earnhardt and Waltrip in the last plate race, at Talladega in April. _____________________________________ Restrictor-plate races: By the Numbers _____________________________________ "Those guys have got it figured out," Busch says of the Dale Earnhardt Inc. team's lock on NASCAR's two biggest tracks. "We've got to figure out what they're doing."Earnhardt is willing to conduct a clinic. And, no, he didn't learn it all from his late father, the all-time maestro of plate racing. First, he acknowledges that team manager Tony Eury Sr. has given him the best combination of car aerodynamics and restrictor-plate engine in NASCAR. "You can't learn how to run up front until you're in a car that can do it," Earnhardt says.

Tony Stewart makes McMullen's day NASCAR star Tony Stewart and several drivers from Canada's CASCAR series put a huge smile on the face of quadriplegic Robbie McMullen of Etobicoke, Ontario, yesterday night. The drivers were at the 401 Mini Indy (Hwy 401 at 427) for an evening of go-kart racing and to show their support for nineteen-year-old McMullen who was paralyzed last July after a racing accident. Stewart, one of several NASCAR drivers set to compete against CASCAR's best in this weekend's Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga Speedway, showed he's quick in anything with a steering wheel and a gas pedal.Following a series of qualifying sessions, the field was narrowed down to ten drivers and Stewart was ranked number one. He was looking forward to pole position for a twenty-lap showdown, but the Home Depot driver wasn't going to get away so easily as the grid was inverted, putting him dead last for the start of the race. Stewart had nine tough CASCAR drivers ahead of him, each gunning for cash prizes donated by Blue Streak Hygrade Motor Products and itching to brag that they beat Tony Stewart. When the checkered flag waved, only Al Turner was ahead of Stewart and, had the race been a little longer, that may not have been the case. |

Martin proves doubters wrong
After two struggling, frustrating seasons in which the veteran was the object of whispers that his career was in its declining stages, Martin is suddenly racing with the elite again. |
Daytona 500 win doesn't pay off for Ward Burton Gaston Gazette,June 30, 2002 ![]()
Ward Burton reaped no intangible benefits from winning the Daytona 500 this year. The tangible benefits, of course, were considerable. First place paid $1,409,017. Burton was unable to use the momentum he had leaving Daytona to become a factor in the race for the Winston Cup championship. Fifteen races later, with the circuit about to make its second visit to Daytona International Speedway, Burton lies 25th in the points standings, with only one top-10 finish since the 500. "You’ve seen statistics where people win the Daytona 500 and have had problems," Burton said. "Others, like the (No.) 24 car (Jeff Gordon), won the race and went on to win the championship. It has no bearing at all on the rest of the season. For whatever reason, we just got behind on the setups, and we’ve had a lot of mechanical problems." FULL STORY
Carrier enjoying latest pit stop ![]() Anything but slow and stable. Just ask Chris Carrier. The 42-year-old Bristol Tennessee native recently saw his career come virtually full circle when he was named crew chief for Abingdon-based Morgan-McClure Motorsports. "The racing business, especially at the Winston Cup level, is like a whirlwind," Carrier said. "You've just got to hold on, keep working hard and ride it out." Carrier has been riding his NASCAR dream cycle since age 14 when he helped longtime Bristol Virginia Busch Series car owner Ed Whitaker. After stops at Abingdon's Henderson Motorsports and Andy Petree Racing, Carrier has returned to the Mountain Empire. "I was very happy working with Andy and we are still good friends," Carrier said. "Because of the sponsor situation Andy faced, I just felt like it was time to make a change." Carrier guided Joe Nemechek to a Winston Cup win last October at Rockingham while working with the Asheville-based Petree team. The current mission for Carrier is to spark struggling M-M Kodak driver Mike Skinner. Despite a strong 12th place finish last week at Sears Point, Skinner is 28th in points with no top-10 finishes in 16 races. |

Can you speak 'NASCAR?' If so, you've got it bad
I guess any sport is full of clichés. I’ve always been intrigued by the fact that, in baseball, a guy with a bat in his hands is either a batter or a hitter unless he gets hit by a pitch, at which point he becomes a "batsman."
Kind of ridiculous, isn’t it?
Well, NASCAR is full of clichés, too. Ones that, upon further review, don’t make a lot of sense. It’s kind of fashionable to speak in a language that is wildly imprecise.

Rudd's remarks reinforced with NASCAR movie Daytona Beach News Journal June 30, 2002 ![]() Maybe Ricky Rudd was right. When the veteran racer first floated his retirement thoughts a couple months back, he bemoaned how his sport seems too enthralled with becoming hip. It's all about serving the punks and attracting the bubblegum generation, Rudd seemed to say. At first, it seemed too much like whining from a guy whose bank account has benefited greatly from NASCAR's marketing genius. Many agreed with Rudd, however, and they had their fears reinforced last week with the announcement that modern pop queen Britney Spears will be teaming with NASCAR to make a movie with the sport as backdrop. "One of NASCAR's objectives is to grow our sport by developing entertainment projects that introduce NASCAR drivers, teams, tracks and their sponsors to an ever-growing audience," NASCAR vice president Paul Brooks said. Sure, can't lose there. Then again, Soupy Sales could do a NASCAR movie and they'd gain a certain amount of new fans from that sought-after vaudeville-era demographic. No doubt, the movie will attract some new fans to the sport. However, using 95 percent of the sports movies ever made as historic perspective, there's also no doubt that the movie will really stink. Anyone else fear "Days of Thunder" with a pierced navel? NO COKE. PEPSI Sometime next year, in the weeks leading up to the movie's release, directors, producers and writers (along with in-step drivers who get their cameos) will all sing the praises of the finished project. "The track action is very realistic," they'll say. Well, that would be a first. No matter the game, Hollywood never seems to make a sports movie without butchering the action scenes in a manner that leaves fans rolling their eyes and heading out for another box of overpriced popcorn. But, who really cares? It's not about art, it's about two things: 1. Increasing the fan base; and 2. Marketing, marketing, marketing. NASCAR's marketing hawks should get involved in a big sponsor-placement campaign with this movie. Those sponsors whose cars get the screen time will likely be those who "play ball." Just a guess, but probably a pretty good one. Given their big-money connections to Pepsi, you can assume Britney's movie will include a few shots of Jeff Gordon, but few (if any) from the "Coca Cola Family of Drivers." Yes, you can expect the movie to feature lots of color, noise and action. And you can expect all involved (including the boys in accounting) to call it a success. Just don't expect "Citizen Kane." |
Winston Cup driver Kyle Petty is gearing up for a big week on the road. But instead of piloting his #45 Sprint Dodge, Petty will be on a Victory motorcycle leading a pack of 250 riders cross-country for the Sprint/Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America.
