'You can say what you want -- you can say it's just having the fastest car that matters. But there's a technique to running out there.'

A Saturday night short-track promoter would put a bounty on Dale Earnhardt Jr., a big bonus to anyone who could beat the ace on his home asphalt.

Earnhardt, 27, the MTV-generation icon and best-selling author -- who also happens to be the best restrictor-plate racer alive -- has won three of the past four "plate" races.

He could easily have been four-for-four. In the Feb. 17 Daytona 500, he contended in a wrecked car, roaring back through the field with a front fender ripped open and flopping, until he was caught up in another wreck.

So Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway, when he goes into the Pepsi 400 as defending champion, maybe Winston should relax the rules for its "No Bull" bonus so that the $1 million goes to any of the 42 other drivers who can beat Earnhardt.

He's so good at it that he freely offers advice on how to beat him: "Break up that teammate tandem" of him and Michael Waltrip.

Kurt Busch has been there, tried that. Still, Roush Racing's prodigy finished a hard-earned third to Earnhardt and Waltrip in the last plate race, at Talladega in April.

Restrictor-plate races: By the Numbers

_____________________________________

"Those guys have got it figured out," Busch says of the Dale Earnhardt Inc. team's lock on NASCAR's two biggest tracks. "We've got to figure out what they're doing."

Earnhardt is willing to conduct a clinic. And, no, he didn't learn it all from his late father, the all-time maestro of plate racing.

First, he acknowledges that team manager Tony Eury Sr. has given him the best combination of car aerodynamics and restrictor-plate engine in NASCAR. "You can't learn how to run up front until you're in a car that can do it," Earnhardt says.

Tony Stewart makes McMullen's day

Motorsport.com,June 30, 2002

NASCAR star Tony Stewart and several drivers from Canada's CASCAR series put a huge smile on the face of quadriplegic Robbie McMullen of Etobicoke, Ontario, yesterday night. The drivers were at the 401 Mini Indy (Hwy 401 at 427) for an evening of go-kart racing and to show their support for nineteen-year-old McMullen who was paralyzed last July after a racing accident.

Stewart, one of several NASCAR drivers set to compete against CASCAR's best in this weekend's Canada Day Shootout at Cayuga Speedway, showed he's quick in anything with a steering wheel and a gas pedal.Following a series of qualifying sessions, the field was narrowed down to ten drivers and Stewart was ranked number one. He was looking forward to pole position for a twenty-lap showdown, but the Home Depot driver wasn't going to get away so easily as the grid was inverted, putting him dead last for the start of the race.

Stewart had nine tough CASCAR drivers ahead of him, each gunning for cash prizes donated by Blue Streak Hygrade Motor Products and itching to brag that they beat Tony Stewart. When the checkered flag waved, only Al Turner was ahead of Stewart and, had the race been a little longer, that may not have been the case.

Daytona 500 win doesn't pay off for Ward Burton

Monte Dutton
Gaston Gazette,June 30, 2002

Ward Burton reaped no intangible benefits from winning the Daytona 500 this year.

The tangible benefits, of course, were considerable. First place paid $1,409,017.

Burton was unable to use the momentum he had leaving Daytona to become a factor in the race for the Winston Cup championship. Fifteen races later, with the circuit about to make its second visit to Daytona International Speedway, Burton lies 25th in the points standings, with only one top-10 finish since the 500.

"You’ve seen statistics where people win the Daytona 500 and have had problems," Burton said. "Others, like the (No.) 24 car (Jeff Gordon), won the race and went on to win the championship. It has no bearing at all on the rest of the season. For whatever reason, we just got behind on the setups, and we’ve had a lot of mechanical problems."

Carrier enjoying latest pit stop

Dustin Long
LapByLap,June 30, 2002

Anything but slow and stable.

Just ask Chris Carrier.

The 42-year-old Bristol Tennessee native recently saw his career come virtually full circle when he was named crew chief for Abingdon-based Morgan-McClure Motorsports.

"The racing business, especially at the Winston Cup level, is like a whirlwind," Carrier said. "You've just got to hold on, keep working hard and ride it out."

Carrier has been riding his NASCAR dream cycle since age 14 when he helped longtime Bristol Virginia Busch Series car owner Ed Whitaker.

After stops at Abingdon's Henderson Motorsports and Andy Petree Racing, Carrier has returned to the Mountain Empire.

"I was very happy working with Andy and we are still good friends," Carrier said. "Because of the sponsor situation Andy faced, I just felt like it was time to make a change."

Carrier guided Joe Nemechek to a Winston Cup win last October at Rockingham while working with the Asheville-based Petree team.

The current mission for Carrier is to spark struggling M-M Kodak driver Mike Skinner. Despite a strong 12th place finish last week at Sears Point, Skinner is 28th in points with no top-10 finishes in 16 races.

Can you speak 'NASCAR?' If so, you've got it bad
Monte Dutton
Gaston Gazette,June 30, 2002

I guess any sport is full of clichés. I’ve always been intrigued by the fact that, in baseball, a guy with a bat in his hands is either a batter or a hitter unless he gets hit by a pitch, at which point he becomes a "batsman."

Kind of ridiculous, isn’t it?

Well, NASCAR is full of clichés, too. Ones that, upon further review, don’t make a lot of sense. It’s kind of fashionable to speak in a language that is wildly imprecise.

Rudd's remarks reinforced with NASCAR movie

By KEN WILLIS
Daytona Beach News Journal June 30, 2002

Maybe Ricky Rudd was right. When the veteran racer first floated his retirement thoughts a couple months back, he bemoaned how his sport seems too enthralled with becoming hip. It's all about serving the punks and attracting the bubblegum generation, Rudd seemed to say.

At first, it seemed too much like whining from a guy whose bank account has benefited greatly from NASCAR's marketing genius. Many agreed with Rudd, however, and they had their fears reinforced last week with the announcement that modern pop queen Britney Spears will be teaming with NASCAR to make a movie with the sport as backdrop.

"One of NASCAR's objectives is to grow our sport by developing entertainment projects that introduce NASCAR drivers, teams, tracks and their sponsors to an ever-growing audience," NASCAR vice president Paul Brooks said.

Sure, can't lose there. Then again, Soupy Sales could do a NASCAR movie and they'd gain a certain amount of new fans from that sought-after vaudeville-era demographic.

No doubt, the movie will attract some new fans to the sport. However, using 95 percent of the sports movies ever made as historic perspective, there's also no doubt that the movie will really stink. Anyone else fear "Days of Thunder" with a pierced navel?

NO COKE. PEPSI

Sometime next year, in the weeks leading up to the movie's release, directors, producers and writers (along with in-step drivers who get their cameos) will all sing the praises of the finished project. "The track action is very realistic," they'll say.

Well, that would be a first. No matter the game, Hollywood never seems to make a sports movie without butchering the action scenes in a manner that leaves fans rolling their eyes and heading out for another box of overpriced popcorn.

But, who really cares? It's not about art, it's about two things: 1. Increasing the fan base; and 2. Marketing, marketing, marketing. NASCAR's marketing hawks should get involved in a big sponsor-placement campaign with this movie. Those sponsors whose cars get the screen time will likely be those who "play ball." Just a guess, but probably a pretty good one.

Given their big-money connections to Pepsi, you can assume Britney's movie will include a few shots of Jeff Gordon, but few (if any) from the "Coca Cola Family of Drivers."

Yes, you can expect the movie to feature lots of color, noise and action. And you can expect all involved (including the boys in accounting) to call it a success.

Just don't expect "Citizen Kane."

NOTES FROM THE TRACK AND AROUND THE WEB:

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

If a Roanoke, Va., television station is right, major changes are in the works for the Robert Yates Racing team next year. WSLS's Jason Ditmore says Ricky Rudd has decided to retire at the end of this season and that Elliott Sadler has signed to drive a third Yates car, which will have M&M's sponsorship. Ditmore cited only unnamed sources for both stories. Rudd, a 45-year-old Virginian who has been competing in the Winston Cup Series since 1975, has said that he would make a decision about his future by mid-July. Sadler, who is driving for the Wood Brothers, has been given the OK to leave after this season, but the station says he has signed a confidentiality agreement that prohibits him from talking about the deal until August.

DARLINGTON SUES EX-SPONSOR

Darlington Raceway is suing Dura Lube for more than $375,000 for what it says were unpaid sponsorship fees for Busch Series races, according to a story in the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier. The paper says the suit filed June 13 in Darlington, S.C., accuses Dura Lube of breach of contract after it allegedly paid its full sponsorship fee of $200,000 for 1999 but only $100,000 of $225,000 owed for 2000 and none of the $250,000 owed for 2001. The story notes that Dura Lube got out of racing after the Federal Trade Commission ordered the corporation to pay $2 million to consumers for making what it said were false and unsubstantiated advertising claims.

PETREE TO FIELD 2ND ENTRY AT DAYTONA
The Hendersonville (N.C.) Times-News reports that Andy Petree Racing will have a press conference in Charlotte Thursday to announce plans to run two cars in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup Race. The paper says Petree, who started the season with two cars before sponsorship woes forced him to trim back to one, plans to enter Mike Wallace in the No. 33 Chevrolet along with regular driver Bobby Hamilton in the No. 65 Chevy. Wallace had started the season in the car.

Andy Petree Racing has picked up sponsorship from 1 800-CALLATT for Collect Calls to enter the team's No. 33 Chevrolet for Mike Wallace in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup race at Daytona International Speedway. The sponsorship is said to be a one-race deal. Cowboy Tour and as the former chief executive of a floor-covering company.

ISC BUYING PIKES PEAK?

The Indianapolis Star says Pikes Peak International Raceway reportedly has a buyer and speculates that International Speedway Corp. could be acquiring the 1-mile oval.

Put Ken Schrader on the list of possible new drivers at Petty Enterprises, according to sources close to the situation. There have been questions in recent weeks about the M&Ms sponsorship on Schrader's current team.

PETREE BUYING PENSKE FORDS

Andy Petree Racing has bought several Fords from the Penske Racing South team in preparation for switching from Chevrolets to Fords next season, the Dallas Morning News says. The team is making the change because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is expected to buy part of Petree's team, has a business relationship with Ford. The paper also says the willingness of team owner Roger Penske to sell some of his cars may lend credence to rumors that Penske may switch to Dodge next year. *********************************

MARTIN TO DRIVE ROUSH TRUCK

The Las Vegas Sun says Mark Martin will drive the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series next year until Kyle Busch turns 18 years old and becomes old enough to pick up the ride again. Busch, a Las Vegas teen, drove the truck in six races last season before NASCAR ruled that drivers in all of its touring series had to be at least 18. Busch, who turned 17 on May 2, has been driving in the American Speed Association this season. The story says Martin agreed to drive the truck to help the team gain owners points until Busch becomes eligible to take over.

CART, IRL DRIVERS LOOKING TO NASCAR?

Newspaper reports today suggest Paul Tracy of CART and Sam Hornish Jr. of the Indy Racing League may be looking to futures in NASCAR. The Chicago Sun-Times says Tracy, a 33-year-old Canadian who has been competing in CART for 12 years, would "look seriously at finding a ride in NASCAR" if CART is no longer an option. Quotes attributed to him in the story, however, might raise some eyebrows: "I've got some contacts with a couple of [NASCAR] teams,'' he said. "It's not a real race car, but they're out there banging doors, so they're not loafing around. And I'm still pretty young compared to most of them.'' The Indianapolis Star, meanwhile, reports Dale Earnhardt Inc. Executive Vice President Ty Norris is finalizing plans to have Hornish, the reigning IRL champ, compete in "some" stock car races next year on dates that don't conflict with the IRL schedule. The story says Hornish likely will drive in the Busch Series but might also compete in the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 Winston Cup races.

MotorsportsTV.com says NASCAR is close to signing a deal that would move the Craftsman Truck Series broadcasts from ESPN and ESPN2 to Speed Channel. The Web site says deal may be done within the next month..

'MEN IN BLACK' PAINT FOR KYLE

Petty Enterprise's No. 45 Dodge driven by Kyle Petty will sport a special paint scheme in the July 6 running of the Pepsi 400 Winston Cup race to coincide with the July 3 opening of "Men In Black II." The paint job, which was designed solely for the race at Daytona International Speedway, is part of a promotion involving the car's primary sponsor, Sprint, and the movie.

IN-CAR VIEWS PAYING OFF?

A research firm that tracks television exposure for sponsors says UPS collected more than $120,000 in "bonus" exposure from in-car shots from Dale Jarrett's car in the debut of NASCAR's "In Demand" service. Joyce Julius and Associates Inc. says the shipping company collected almost 2 hours of exposure from Jarrett's in-car cameras during the June 16 Sirius Satellite Radio 400 Winston Cup race at Michigan. The digital service, which was offered for free during the Michigan race, is available for $99 for the remainder of the season. The package offers five in-car channels, the network broadcast and a statistics station.

Kevin and Rachel crank the stereo and head to Ocean Grove, New Jersey. As they cruise to the beach, our hosts make typical road trip stops along the way. Aside from a pit stop at a diner and refueling at a gas station, Kevin and Rachel also take in sights at Springsteen's old stomping grounds, the Stone Pony, in Asbury Park, NJ. BUCKSHOT PLANNING RETURN?
Buckshot Jones, who started the season as the driver of Petty Enterprises' No. 44 Dodge before losing the Winston Cup ride in April, has posted a very brief note on his Web site that says he will "make a big announcement by the end of June." Jones has told NASCAR Winston Cup Scene that he has a sponsor and has talked with seven or eight teams about driving but won't return unless it's with a competitive team.

Jasper Motorsports signs Said for road courses

Jasper Motorsports announced today that road racing veteran Boris Said will drive the #67 Jasper Engines & Transmissions Ford at both road course races on the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule, beginning with next weekend's event at Sears Point Raceway. Said joins #77 Jasper Ford driver Dave Blaney under the Jasper Motorsports banner.

Much is being made of the current generation gap between NASCAR's 20-somethings and the 40-somethings. But Jon Wood, one of the promising up-and-comers on the truck tour, says that's nothing: last season Wood, at 19, was matched against legendary Herschell McGriff, 74, at California, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Kansas City. McGriff, who started the first Southern 500 and whose six decades of racing alone should make him a Hall of Fame candidate, finally retired earlier this year.
