A&J's Commentary

A&J Racing's Main Page

By Lee Spencer
TSN,June 29, 2002

Hardly a weekend goes by without someone in the garage area saying, "This wouldn't be happening if Dale Earnhardt were still alive."

Earnhardt's formal education may have stopped at eighth grade, but when it came to his knowledge of people and the Machiavellian nature of business -- especially as it involved NASCAR racing -- he was truly gifted. As a leader, there was no one who could inspire the troops or offer direction the way Earnhardt did.

So when Earnhardt was taken from us in an instant, the shock ran deep. In the aftermath, as reality settled in, many wondered, "What now?" Despite formal "contingency plans" in the case of an accident of this proportion, nothing prepares families or friends for the long days and nights that follow when something just seems to be missing. You pick up the phone to share some news and realize the thought is futile.

It has been 17 months since the tragic February afternoon when Winston Cup lost its fiercest competitor and DEI lost its captain. As hard as it was for the Earnhardt family to lose a son, a brother, a husband or a father, the teams also lost the guidance they had taken for granted.

NASCAR movie history not on Britney's side
Monte Dutton Gaston Gazette,June 29,2002

Britney Spears is going to star in a NASCAR-themed movie. NASCAR itself is actively involved in the production.

Oh, boy. I can’t wait.

All we really need to know is that NASCAR thinks a movie starring Britney Spears is a good thing. The good news is that it can’t be worse than the movies that came before it.

Wrong Turns

No one can dispute that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a rising star and already one of the most popular drivers in Winston Cup.

He's also 16th in points and hasn't finished in the top 10 since his victory at Talladega on April 21. That's a two-month-long drought for what's considered one of the elite teams in all of racing.

_____________________________________

NASCAR’s Earnhardt plans visit to Ashwaubenon

_____________________________________

One would think this is bigger news than it seems to be.

Because of Junior's immense popularity, charisma and famous last name, you don't hear much about his slump. Most of the scrutiny surrounding Dale Earnhardt Inc. this season has been absorbed by Earnhardt's teammates -- Steve Park and Michael Waltrip.

All season, we've heard speculation regarding Park's and Waltrip's future (or lack thereof) at DEI. Hardly a word has been mentioned about Junior's slide. Even the most ardent Earnhardt fans don't appear to be very concerned.

His team is simply too good for this continue, right?

No Luck for Nadeau

AP,June 29, 2002

Jerry Nadeau sat inside his broken-down car for what seemed to be an eternity. With a victory in his grasp just seconds earlier, he could not believe he had lost another race so close to the finish line.

In a one-race deal for Petty Enterprises last week, he took a commanding lead in the No. 44 Dodge when a gear broke with two laps left. Unable to coast around the road course in Sonoma, Calif., he pulled over and sat dejectedly while Ricky Rudd led the rest of the field across the finish line.

He was near tears when he finally climbed from the car, a victim yet again in the waning moments of a race. That's just the way it seems to go for Nadeau, a hard-luck racer who never seems to catch a break.

"I think everybody knows that I won that race, I just didn't make it to the end, and that's a bum deal," he said, his spirits considerably higher during a telephone interview while taking a break during a test session in Chicago.

"What am I supposed to do? I can't go home and beat my dog because of it. I can't get out of the car and kick the tires. It's just one of those things that I have to deal with."

He's certainly had enough practice learning how to cope with frustration.

Nadeau ran out of gas while leading on the final lap of the season-finale in Atlanta last year, his car stalling as Bobby Labonte coasted to victory. A few months earlier, he'd been dominant in the inaugural race at Chicago when he lost his motor.

Whisnant partners with Hamlin
Motorsport.com,June 29, 2002

"My Dad (Reid) and I are very pleased to announce our partnership with Kevin (Hamlin)," said Whisnant. "He will join our team as a partner on a second RW Performance Chevrolet. NASCAR's exposure turns a page

By JIM MCLAURIN
The (Columbia) State June 29, 2002

Tony Stewart

Want to know more about Tony Stewart, especially since he's not talking as much to the media anymore? Pick up one of the three books written about him in the past year or so. Dale Earnhardt Jr.? Grab the book he wrote himself. How about Sterling Marlin? Well, there's a book on him that's a few years old, but if he wins the Winston Cup championship, you can bet it will be updated and in bookstores by next spring.

Dale Earnhardt As racing has grown, books about NASCAR, once hardly more than a cottage industry, have almost become a genre unto themselves. A casual scan of the dot-com bookstores shows at least 15 titles published since 2000, and seven of those have come since January.

"The sport in general is so ubiquitous, in terms of Junior's ads and the races on television and all the press, that folks my way came to see it as a phenomenon that spread far beyond the South," said Colin Fox, an editor with Warner Books, a New York City publishing house. "It's a huge audience, I think. It's here to stay, and it's all over."

Why the sudden rush to get racing books into print? There is a "strike while the iron is hot" mentality, certainly, but part of the reason is the authors themselves. Five years ago, many writers would have never considered writing a book about racing for fear it wouldn't sell. Now, several authors believe NASCAR books will, at the worst, have a chance to break even.

"Twenty years ago, the New York publishers said, `NASCAR fans can't read,' " said Ed Hinton, the author of "Daytona.". "Ten years ago, they said, `Well, they can read, but they don't.' Now, they're saying, `Maybe they will.' "

That's what the publishers and authors are banking on.

Something for everyone

Racing books come in all sizes and shapes from "coffee-table" ones such as "The Petty Family Album" (which is just what it says, a photo album of NASCAR's first family) to "guides to Winston Cup tracks" (of which there have been two published this year) to "a-season-with" books to historical books. These books run the gamut, which is a necessity. Readers want different things, from, for instance, Charlotte Observer NASCAR writer David Poole's book, "Race with Destiny," the story of the 1992 Hooters 500, one of the most pivotal races in NASCAR history, to Monte Dutton's "Rebel with a Cause," the story of Stewart's second NASCAR season.

NOTES FROM THE TRACK AND AROUND THE WEB:

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

If a Roanoke, Va., television station is right, major changes are in the works for the Robert Yates Racing team next year. WSLS's Jason Ditmore says Ricky Rudd has decided to retire at the end of this season and that Elliott Sadler has signed to drive a third Yates car, which will have M&M's sponsorship. Ditmore cited only unnamed sources for both stories. Rudd, a 45-year-old Virginian who has been competing in the Winston Cup Series since 1975, has said that he would make a decision about his future by mid-July. Sadler, who is driving for the Wood Brothers, has been given the OK to leave after this season, but the station says he has signed a confidentiality agreement that prohibits him from talking about the deal until August.

DARLINGTON SUES EX-SPONSOR

Darlington Raceway is suing Dura Lube for more than $375,000 for what it says were unpaid sponsorship fees for Busch Series races, according to a story in the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier. The paper says the suit filed June 13 in Darlington, S.C., accuses Dura Lube of breach of contract after it allegedly paid its full sponsorship fee of $200,000 for 1999 but only $100,000 of $225,000 owed for 2000 and none of the $250,000 owed for 2001. The story notes that Dura Lube got out of racing after the Federal Trade Commission ordered the corporation to pay $2 million to consumers for making what it said were false and unsubstantiated advertising claims.

PETREE TO FIELD 2ND ENTRY AT DAYTONA
The Hendersonville (N.C.) Times-News reports that Andy Petree Racing will have a press conference in Charlotte Thursday to announce plans to run two cars in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup Race. The paper says Petree, who started the season with two cars before sponsorship woes forced him to trim back to one, plans to enter Mike Wallace in the No. 33 Chevrolet along with regular driver Bobby Hamilton in the No. 65 Chevy. Wallace had started the season in the car.

The sponsorship is said to be a one-race deal. Cowboy Tour and as the former chief executive of a floor-covering company.

A SPECIAL INCENTIVE

Cingular Wireless says it will donate $100,000 to Special Olympics if Robby Gordon can drive Richard Childress Racing's No. 31 Chevrolet to victory in next Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point Raceway. Cingular Wireless, which sponsors Gordon's car, is in the midst of a four-year campaign to raise $40 million for Special Olympics. Cingular Wireless will also donate $100 for each lap he leads and $50 for each lap he completes in the 112-lap event.

PETREE BUYING PENSKE FORDS

Andy Petree Racing has bought several Fords from the Penske Racing South team in preparation for switching from Chevrolets to Fords next season, the Dallas Morning News says. The team is making the change because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is expected to buy part of Petree's team, has a business relationship with Ford. The paper also says the willingness of team owner Roger Penske to sell some of his cars may lend credence to rumors that Penske may switch to Dodge next year. *********************************

MARTIN TO DRIVE ROUSH TRUCK

The Las Vegas Sun says Mark Martin will drive the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series next year until Kyle Busch turns 18 years old and becomes old enough to pick up the ride again. Busch, a Las Vegas teen, drove the truck in six races last season before NASCAR ruled that drivers in all of its touring series had to be at least 18. Busch, who turned 17 on May 2, has been driving in the American Speed Association this season. The story says Martin agreed to drive the truck to help the team gain owners points until Busch becomes eligible to take over.

CREW CHIEF LEAVES HAMILTON TRUCK
Bobby Hamilton Racing says crew chief Danny Gill has left its No. 18 team of Robert Pressley in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. CART, IRL DRIVERS LOOKING TO NASCAR?

Newspaper reports today suggest Paul Tracy of CART and Sam Hornish Jr. of the Indy Racing League may be looking to futures in NASCAR. The Chicago Sun-Times says Tracy, a 33-year-old Canadian who has been competing in CART for 12 years, would "look seriously at finding a ride in NASCAR" if CART is no longer an option. Quotes attributed to him in the story, however, might raise some eyebrows: "I've got some contacts with a couple of [NASCAR] teams,'' he said. "It's not a real race car, but they're out there banging doors, so they're not loafing around. And I'm still pretty young compared to most of them.'' The Indianapolis Star, meanwhile, reports Dale Earnhardt Inc. Executive Vice President Ty Norris is finalizing plans to have Hornish, the reigning IRL champ, compete in "some" stock car races next year on dates that don't conflict with the IRL schedule. The story says Hornish likely will drive in the Busch Series but might also compete in the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 Winston Cup races. TRUCK SERIES MOVING TO SPEED CHANNEL?

MotorsportsTV.com says NASCAR is close to signing a deal that would move the Craftsman Truck Series broadcasts from ESPN and ESPN2 to Speed Channel. The Web site says deal may be done within the next month..

'MEN IN BLACK' PAINT FOR KYLE

Petty Enterprise's No. 45 Dodge driven by Kyle Petty will sport a special paint scheme in the July 6 running of the Pepsi 400 Winston Cup race to coincide with the July 3 opening of "Men In Black II." The paint job, which was designed solely for the race at Daytona International Speedway, is part of a promotion involving the car's primary sponsor, Sprint, and the movie.

IN-CAR VIEWS PAYING OFF?

A research firm that tracks television exposure for sponsors says UPS collected more than $120,000 in "bonus" exposure from in-car shots from Dale Jarrett's car in the debut of NASCAR's "In Demand" service. Joyce Julius and Associates Inc. says the shipping company collected almost 2 hours of exposure from Jarrett's in-car cameras during the June 16 Sirius Satellite Radio 400 Winston Cup race at Michigan. The digital service, which was offered for free during the Michigan race, is available for $99 for the remainder of the season. The package offers five in-car channels, the network broadcast and a statistics station.

Kevin and Rachel crank the stereo and head to Ocean Grove, New Jersey. As they cruise to the beach, our hosts make typical road trip stops along the way. Aside from a pit stop at a diner and refueling at a gas station, Kevin and Rachel also take in sights at Springsteen's old stomping grounds, the Stone Pony, in Asbury Park, NJ. Sure to "get your motor runnin'" -- VH1's Top Ten All Time Greatest Driving Songs is the ultimate road trip soundtrack. (Premieres from 12:30-1:30p)

BUCKSHOT PLANNING RETURN?
Buckshot Jones, who started the season as the driver of Petty Enterprises' No. 44 Dodge before losing the Winston Cup ride in April, has posted a very brief note on his Web site that says he will "make a big announcement by the end of June." Jones has told NASCAR Winston Cup Scene that he has a sponsor and has talked with seven or eight teams about driving but won't return unless it's with a competitive team.

Jasper Motorsports signs Said for road courses

Jasper Motorsports announced today that road racing veteran Boris Said will drive the #67 Jasper Engines & Transmissions Ford at both road course races on the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule, beginning with next weekend's event at Sears Point Raceway. Much is being made of the current generation gap between NASCAR's 20-somethings and the 40-somethings. But Jon Wood, one of the promising up-and-comers on the truck tour, says that's nothing: last season Wood, at 19, was matched against legendary Herschell McGriff, 74, at California, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Kansas City. McGriff, who started the first Southern 500 and whose six decades of racing alone should make him a Hall of Fame candidate, finally retired earlier this year.
