Sam Hornish Jr. is just about ready to dip his toes in NASCAR's waters.

Ty Norris, executive vice president for high-profile Dale Earnhardt Inc., confirmed Wednesday plans are being finalized to have the defending Indy Racing League champion compete in "some" stock car races next season.

Hornish likely will drive in the Busch Grand National division, although John Barnes, general manager of Hornish's IRL team, Panther Racing, said the deal could include a Winston Cup program for the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400.

"We're two or three weeks away from knowing our entire lineup for next year," Norris said. "But Hornish is something we want to do if we can get the details worked out."

NASCAR officials became interested in Hornish after his second-place finish in his first stock car race, the International Race of Champions event at Daytona in February.

Hornish, who turns 23 next week, emphasized he will remain a full-time IRL driver, in part because he's locked in to Panther through next season.

The Indianapolis-based team officially exercised its third-year option on Hornish in January and is negotiating an extension through 2005. Both sides hope to sign the contract by season's end.

Sponsorship again on the line

By Jerry Bonkowski
ESPN.com,June 28, 2002

Bodine climbed into the Discover car for the Dover race in June.

This off-weekend will be the last respite for Winston Cup teams before next Saturday's Pepsi 400 begins a grueling streak of 20 consecutive weeks of racing. It's no wonder most drivers, crew chiefs and team members are enjoying one last hurrah with their families before crunch time kicks off.

But for at least one driver, he'd likely rather be racing this weekend. After all, Todd Bodine has had way too many weekends off this season -- 10, to be exact. After sponsorship from Kmart dried up, Bodine was forced to the sidelines before Discover Card gave him a new six-week license on his racing life earlier this month.

Petree Dials Up Sponsorship

By Lee Montgomery
SpeedFX.com,June 28, 2002

Wallace hopes to "collect" a win in the Pepsi 400 at Daytona.

They say NASCAR is a family sport. In the Wallace family, it definitely is. Recently, Kenny Wallace found out that 1-800-CALL-ATT was looking for sponsor a car. And guess who ended up with the deal? Older brother Mike.

So Kenny helped broker a deal between AT&T and Andy Petree Racing to put Mike in the No. 33 car for the Winston Cup race at Daytona International Speedway on July 6. _____________________________________

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

GEICO Direct insurance will be on Wallace’s No. 4 Busch Series car for Daytona and two other races. But the CALL-ATT deal is just for Daytona.

Barkdoll and Wallace hope the sponsorship leads to more races.

“We should be able to go there and make a very competitive showing,” Wallace said. “I feel we have the capability of winning the race. If you’re going to do a one-off deal, you try to put five aces in the deck, and we’re doing that by going to Daytona.”

Gaughan rolls dice in racing

By Monte Dutton
Gaston Gazette,June 28, 2002

NASCAR actually has a driver whose name is Brendan Gaughan, which, at least in terms of a name, is a long way from Fireball Roberts or even Speedy Thompson. Brendan Gaughan conjures up the image of an Irish poet or actor.

Come to think of it, Russell Crowe would be a more likely name for a stock-car racer than Brendan Gaughan.

Gaughan is actually a stock-truck racer. He is likely — barring a comeback from another truck racer, Bill Lester, with an unlikely background — to be the Craftsman Truck Series’ Raybestos Rookie of the Year. He already has his first victory, which came June 7 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The son of a Las Vegas, Nev., gaming mogul, Gaughan also is a former college basketball player. He was a walk-on at Georgetown, where he was a teammate of NBA star Allen Iverson.

"Coach (John) Thompson has a long relationship with my father from Las Vegas, just from the fact that we used to allow his team to stay at our properties, which we don’t allow any college program to stay at," Gaughan recalled. "But because of his reputation, we allowed the Hoyas to stay at the Barbary Coast.

Mark Martin's son racing at Lowe's

BY GODWIN KELLY
Daytona Beach News Journal June 28, 2002

Mark Martin and son Matt, 10, have a little get-together before Matt's quarter midget race at New Smyrna Quarter Midget Raceway in July 2001

Matt Martin is on the road again. The 10-year-old son of Mark Martin is participating on a part-time basis in the Lowe's Motor Speedway Summer Shootout Series racing a couple of Bandolero cars. Mark, who is second in Winston Cup points heading into next weekend's Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, said Matt has made incredible gains in his driving ability over the last year. "In Matt's driving knowledge, there's been a tremendous change in his driving from last year to this year," said Mark. "Big time. He's more experienced, more confident, more sure of himself and real solid. He's just shown a lot more maturity."

_____________________________________

Roush Racing Citgo team - "Not just a Sunday guy"

_____________________________________

Matt's crew crief Shane Henry, echoed Mark's opinion of the youngster's driving ability.

"Matt has really been doing great," said Henry, 25, a former dirt tracker racer. "He's lapped just about everyone in those races, except for two or three drivers. Usually, by the middle of the race, he has a half-lap lead on everyone."

This is Matt's third year of competition, which started at a quarter-midget track in Apopka. He really got a feel for racing last year at Little New Smyrna Speedway.

Meeting in '77 set paths for Dale Jarrett, Andy Petree

By ANNE M. PETERSON
AP, June 28, 2002

Andy Petree, then a tire changer, heads for the left-front of the Skoal Bandit car driven by Ken Schrader at Bristol in 1998

Andy Petree was a teenage gearhead back in 1977, building his own race car, when 20-year-old Dale Jarrett stopped by for a look. Jarrett’s visit to the garage where Petree spent every spare minute would shape both men’s lives in ways they never could have imagined.

Jarrett, of course, went on to become one of racing’s top stars and the 1999 NASCAR Winston Cup champion. Petree became a respected crew chief and now owns his own team.

Back then they were just Dale and Andy.

Jarrett was a talented athlete at Newton-Conover High School in Newton, N.C. Name the sport and he was on the team: football, basketball, baseball. He excelled at golf.

NOTES FROM THE TRACK AND AROUND THE WEB:

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

If a Roanoke, Va., television station is right, major changes are in the works for the Robert Yates Racing team next year. WSLS's Jason Ditmore says Ricky Rudd has decided to retire at the end of this season and that Elliott Sadler has signed to drive a third Yates car, which will have M&M's sponsorship. Ditmore cited only unnamed sources for both stories. Rudd, a 45-year-old Virginian who has been competing in the Winston Cup Series since 1975, has said that he would make a decision about his future by mid-July. Sadler, who is driving for the Wood Brothers, has been given the OK to leave after this season, but the station says he has signed a confidentiality agreement that prohibits him from talking about the deal until August.

DARLINGTON SUES EX-SPONSOR

Darlington Raceway is suing Dura Lube for more than $375,000 for what it says were unpaid sponsorship fees for Busch Series races, according to a story in the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier. The paper says the suit filed June 13 in Darlington, S.C., accuses Dura Lube of breach of contract after it allegedly paid its full sponsorship fee of $200,000 for 1999 but only $100,000 of $225,000 owed for 2000 and none of the $250,000 owed for 2001. The story notes that Dura Lube got out of racing after the Federal Trade Commission ordered the corporation to pay $2 million to consumers for making what it said were false and unsubstantiated advertising claims.

PETREE TO FIELD 2ND ENTRY AT DAYTONA
The Hendersonville (N.C.) Times-News reports that Andy Petree Racing will have a press conference in Charlotte Thursday to announce plans to run two cars in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup Race. The paper says Petree, who started the season with two cars before sponsorship woes forced him to trim back to one, plans to enter Mike Wallace in the No. 33 Chevrolet along with regular driver Bobby Hamilton in the No. 65 Chevy. Wallace had started the season in the car.

Cingular Wireless says it will donate $100,000 to Special Olympics if Robby Gordon can drive Richard Childress Racing's No. 31 Chevrolet to victory in next Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point Raceway. Cingular Wireless, which sponsors Gordon's car, is in the midst of a four-year campaign to raise $40 million for Special Olympics. Cingular Wireless will also donate $100 for each lap he leads and $50 for each lap he completes in the 112-lap event.

PETREE BUYING PENSKE FORDS

Andy Petree Racing has bought several Fords from the Penske Racing South team in preparation for switching from Chevrolets to Fords next season, the Dallas Morning News says. The team is making the change because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is expected to buy part of Petree's team, has a business relationship with Ford. The paper also says the willingness of team owner Roger Penske to sell some of his cars may lend credence to rumors that Penske may switch to Dodge next year. *********************************

MARTIN TO DRIVE ROUSH TRUCK

The Las Vegas Sun says Mark Martin will drive the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series next year until Kyle Busch turns 18 years old and becomes old enough to pick up the ride again. Busch, a Las Vegas teen, drove the truck in six races last season before NASCAR ruled that drivers in all of its touring series had to be at least 18. Busch, who turned 17 on May 2, has been driving in the American Speed Association this season. The story says Martin agreed to drive the truck to help the team gain owners points until Busch becomes eligible to take over.

CART, IRL DRIVERS LOOKING TO NASCAR?

Newspaper reports today suggest Paul Tracy of CART and Sam Hornish Jr. of the Indy Racing League may be looking to futures in NASCAR. The Chicago Sun-Times says Tracy, a 33-year-old Canadian who has been competing in CART for 12 years, would "look seriously at finding a ride in NASCAR" if CART is no longer an option. Quotes attributed to him in the story, however, might raise some eyebrows: "I've got some contacts with a couple of [NASCAR] teams,'' he said. "It's not a real race car, but they're out there banging doors, so they're not loafing around. And I'm still pretty young compared to most of them.'' The Indianapolis Star, meanwhile, reports Dale Earnhardt Inc. Executive Vice President Ty Norris is finalizing plans to have Hornish, the reigning IRL champ, compete in "some" stock car races next year on dates that don't conflict with the IRL schedule. The story says Hornish likely will drive in the Busch Series but might also compete in the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 Winston Cup races. TRUCK SERIES MOVING TO SPEED CHANNEL?

MotorsportsTV.com says NASCAR is close to signing a deal that would move the Craftsman Truck Series broadcasts from ESPN and ESPN2 to Speed Channel. The Web site says deal may be done within the next month..

A research firm that tracks television exposure for sponsors says UPS collected more than $120,000 in "bonus" exposure from in-car shots from Dale Jarrett's car in the debut of NASCAR's "In Demand" service. Joyce Julius and Associates Inc. says the shipping company collected almost 2 hours of exposure from Jarrett's in-car cameras during the June 16 Sirius Satellite Radio 400 Winston Cup race at Michigan. The digital service, which was offered for free during the Michigan race, is available for $99 for the remainder of the season. The package offers five in-car channels, the network broadcast and a statistics station.

Much is being made of the current generation gap between NASCAR's 20-somethings and the 40-somethings. But Jon Wood, one of the promising up-and-comers on the truck tour, says that's nothing: last season Wood, at 19, was matched against legendary Herschell McGriff, 74, at California, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Kansas City. McGriff, who started the first Southern 500 and whose six decades of racing alone should make him a Hall of Fame candidate, finally retired earlier this year.
