NASCAR continues to grow at unprecedented level, and remains second only to the NFL in Total viewership.

The mathematical half way point for the NASCAR Winston Cup season is not until the end of July, but traditionally, it is just before the series heads to Daytona for the summer race. With half of the 2002 season behind us, this year's Winston Cup season has held many surprises and has generated many incomplete story lines.

Jeff Gordon has not won a race in twenty-four events. Not being in victory lane has not demoralized this team, they currently sit third in points, less than ninety points out of first. At their current pace they should take over the point lead by the second Pocono race. The consistency the team has shown is quietly keeping them in the title hunt. They could be the first team to do the unthinkable, win a championship without winning a race.

The focus on the "Young Guns" has been a center of attention in the series since Jimmie Johnson won the pole for the Daytona 500. In terms of Winston Cup, the notation "Rookie" has become a relative term. Talented young drivers in top equipment are going to generate some excitement.Jimmie Johnson has proven he can win, but as he demonstrated at Charlotte and Michigan that he can also make mistakes. Ryan Newman, Kurt Bush, and the group of young drivers have a great deal to learn, and are due to make gaffes with all the pressure and attention they receiving. Talent and the best equipment do not make up for experience, and the second half of the season will see many of the young guns shoot themselves.

The performance of the teams from the Roush racing stable has been an unexpected surprise.

Last year Roush teams combined for two wins, and with the exception of Jeff Burton, all finished out of the top ten in the points. Six-months later, they are on top of the world, with all but Burton in the top ten. The four teams have combined for five wins.

A symbolic parallel of Jack Roush's recovery from a near fatal plane crash, his race teams are proving they have recovered and are a force to be reckoned with. The team's turn around is not a fluke, but the fruits of hard work and dedication. These teams did not find wins, they earned them.

Rest of NASCAR anxiously awaiting Rudd's decision

By Jeff Owens
SportsLine.com,June 27, 2002

With no Winston Cup race scheduled for this weekend, most of NASCAR's top race teams and drivers will take the week off, getting a little rest and relaxation before beginning a stretch of 20 consecutive races beginning with next week's Pepsi 400 at Daytona.

_____________________________________

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

_____________________________________

Ricky Rudd, the winner of last week's race at the newly named Infineon Raceway, is no exception. Rudd will take his wife Linda, his son Landon and a few neighborhood kids to Disney World for a few days.

Ricky Rudd has 23 career victories in his 26-year career

But rest assured, there won't be total rest and relaxation for Rudd, and not because he and his wife will be chasing 7-year-olds around the Magic Kingdom.

Rudd has a lot on his mind these days. And as he nears one of the biggest decisions of his 26-year career, the racing world is waiting to hear if he will retire at the end of this season or race for one more year.

"There are some tough questions that we're facing," Rudd says. "We've got some serious things we need to think about."

So serious that Rudd's decision could affect the entire Winston Cup circuit.

Time To Get Serious

By Jerry Bonkowski
ESPN.com,June 27, 2002

Marlin holds a 62-point lead in the standings.

NASCAR's Silly Season usually starts late in the season and continues during the off-season, when rumors fly about which drivers and crew chiefs will be changing teams and where they may may wind up.

That was then, but this is now. With its third and final off-weekend of the season on tap, NASCAR is on the eve of beginning its 20-week, non-stop marathon to the Winston Cup championship.

_____________________________________

Wednesday test notes: Daytona

_____________________________________

Perhaps someone should start calling the next 20 weeks Serious Season -- when there's nothing silly about who is going to end up the champ and how they're going to accomplish it.

Starting with the July 6 Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway, each and every team will throw all its chips on the table for the final 20 weeks. With the first 16 races of the season serving as a prelude, the "real" season gets underway next week -- there will be no no holding back for the rest of the year.

Twenty weeks and 140 days. Starting at Daytona, this stretch run is promising to become one of the more exciting finishes in the last several years. With the standings becoming tighter after last Sunday's race at Sears Point, the next 20-week period is going to be one of the biggest shootouts since the OK Corral.

Let's take a look at the top-10 drivers in the standings and what they need to do to emerge as champion:

Wallace Primed for July
Lee Spencer
TSN,June 27, 2002

Wallace hasn't had a top-five finish this year, yet he has a solid position in the top 10 in the points race. Wallace, a standout chassis man, has had a tough time deciphering the new tire compounds and their relationship to handling.

After Richmond, the team tested the tire that will be used at New Hampshire, and that should give Wallace a tremendous advantage there. It also tested at Pocono and will test cars for Indy and Bristol in July.

Reduced-scale cars yield large-scale fun

BY Amy Rosewater
USA Today June 27, 2002

Joey Kinnett, 8, drives his quarter midget in practice laps at the Mini Indy track.

Joey Kinnett is like any race car driver. He races nearly every weekend. He has sponsors and tons of trophies. He even has his own Web site.

Joey Kinnett just finished second grade.

"I like winning," Kinnett said after his father, Gary, pulled him from a racing game on his PlayStation in his trailer at Mini-Indy Speedway to do an interview.

"I like getting trophies. I like getting medals."

Race fan's fight with leukemia sparks support

_____________________________________

Kinnett, who celebrated his eighth birthday in April, is one of thousands of youngsters who have taken to quarter-midget racing. As the name suggests, quarter-midget race cars are scaled-down versions of midget or sprint cars.

Drivers such as Kinnett, who lives in Irvington, Ind., compete at tracks that are 1/20th of a mile. At the lower levels of the sport, drivers travel about 20 mph. The fastest cars can reach 65 mph.

Many drivers come from the Midwest, although the sport is popular in other parts of the country, as well. There are tracks in New Jersey, Montana and British Columbia.

Wisconsin driver to get home-track advantage

By JIM UTTER
Knight Ridder, June 27, 2002

Perhaps Johnny Sauter needs to go home.

Sauter, a NASCAR Grand National series rookie and Wisconsin native, gets his chance this weekend at The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wis. That's the site of Sunday's GNC Live Well 250 (2:30 p.m., FX). Qualifying is 12:15 p.m. Saturday.

After a strong start, Sauter has struggled. His crashes at California and Talladega prompted owner Richard Childress to have Sauter examined last month in Charlotte. Doctors cleared him to race.

In his first eight races, Sauter averaged a 9.9 starting position and 17.4 finish. In the seven races since, his average start has dropped to 23.9 and finish to 25.1.

NOTES FROM THE TRACK AND AROUND THE WEB:

RUDD RETIRING, SADLER ADDED AT YATES?

If a Roanoke, Va., television station is right, major changes are in the works for the Robert Yates Racing team next year. WSLS's Jason Ditmore says Ricky Rudd has decided to retire at the end of this season and that Elliott Sadler has signed to drive a third Yates car, which will have M&M's sponsorship. Ditmore cited only unnamed sources for both stories. Rudd, a 45-year-old Virginian who has been competing in the Winston Cup Series since 1975, has said that he would make a decision about his future by mid-July. Sadler, who is driving for the Wood Brothers, has been given the OK to leave after this season, but the station says he has signed a confidentiality agreement that prohibits him from talking about the deal until August.

DARLINGTON SUES EX-SPONSOR

Darlington Raceway is suing Dura Lube for more than $375,000 for what it says were unpaid sponsorship fees for Busch Series races, according to a story in the Charleston (S.C.) Post and Courier. The paper says the suit filed June 13 in Darlington, S.C., accuses Dura Lube of breach of contract after it allegedly paid its full sponsorship fee of $200,000 for 1999 but only $100,000 of $225,000 owed for 2000 and none of the $250,000 owed for 2001. The story notes that Dura Lube got out of racing after the Federal Trade Commission ordered the corporation to pay $2 million to consumers for making what it said were false and unsubstantiated advertising claims.

PETREE TO FIELD 2ND ENTRY AT DAYTONA
The Hendersonville (N.C.) Times-News reports that Andy Petree Racing will have a press conference in Charlotte Thursday to announce plans to run two cars in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup Race. The paper says Petree, who started the season with two cars before sponsorship woes forced him to trim back to one, plans to enter Mike Wallace in the No. 33 Chevrolet along with regular driver Bobby Hamilton in the No. 65 Chevy. Wallace had started the season in the car.

The sponsorship is said to be a one-race deal. Cowboy Tour and as the former chief executive of a floor-covering company.

A SPECIAL INCENTIVE

Cingular Wireless says it will donate $100,000 to Special Olympics if Robby Gordon can drive Richard Childress Racing's No. 31 Chevrolet to victory in next Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point Raceway. Cingular Wireless, which sponsors Gordon's car, is in the midst of a four-year campaign to raise $40 million for Special Olympics. Cingular Wireless will also donate $100 for each lap he leads and $50 for each lap he completes in the 112-lap event.

PETREE BUYING PENSKE FORDS

Andy Petree Racing has bought several Fords from the Penske Racing South team in preparation for switching from Chevrolets to Fords next season, the Dallas Morning News says. The team is making the change because Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who is expected to buy part of Petree's team, has a business relationship with Ford. The paper also says the willingness of team owner Roger Penske to sell some of his cars may lend credence to rumors that Penske may switch to Dodge next year. *********************************

MARTIN TO DRIVE ROUSH TRUCK

The Las Vegas Sun says Mark Martin will drive the No. 99 Roush Racing Ford in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series next year until Kyle Busch turns 18 years old and becomes old enough to pick up the ride again. Busch, a Las Vegas teen, drove the truck in six races last season before NASCAR ruled that drivers in all of its touring series had to be at least 18. Busch, who turned 17 on May 2, has been driving in the American Speed Association this season. The story says Martin agreed to drive the truck to help the team gain owners points until Busch becomes eligible to take over.

CREW CHIEF LEAVES HAMILTON TRUCK
Bobby Hamilton Racing says crew chief Danny Gill has left its No. 18 team of Robert Pressley in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. CART, IRL DRIVERS LOOKING TO NASCAR?

Newspaper reports today suggest Paul Tracy of CART and Sam Hornish Jr. of the Indy Racing League may be looking to futures in NASCAR. The Chicago Sun-Times says Tracy, a 33-year-old Canadian who has been competing in CART for 12 years, would "look seriously at finding a ride in NASCAR" if CART is no longer an option. Quotes attributed to him in the story, however, might raise some eyebrows: "I've got some contacts with a couple of [NASCAR] teams,'' he said. "It's not a real race car, but they're out there banging doors, so they're not loafing around. And I'm still pretty young compared to most of them.'' The Indianapolis Star, meanwhile, reports Dale Earnhardt Inc. Executive Vice President Ty Norris is finalizing plans to have Hornish, the reigning IRL champ, compete in "some" stock car races next year on dates that don't conflict with the IRL schedule. The story says Hornish likely will drive in the Busch Series but might also compete in the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 400 Winston Cup races. TRUCK SERIES MOVING TO SPEED CHANNEL?

MotorsportsTV.com says NASCAR is close to signing a deal that would move the Craftsman Truck Series broadcasts from ESPN and ESPN2 to Speed Channel. The Web site says deal may be done within the next month..

'MEN IN BLACK' PAINT FOR KYLE

Petty Enterprise's No. 45 Dodge driven by Kyle Petty will sport a special paint scheme in the July 6 running of the Pepsi 400 Winston Cup race to coincide with the July 3 opening of "Men In Black II." The paint job, which was designed solely for the race at Daytona International Speedway, is part of a promotion involving the car's primary sponsor, Sprint, and the movie.

IN-CAR VIEWS PAYING OFF?

A research firm that tracks television exposure for sponsors says UPS collected more than $120,000 in "bonus" exposure from in-car shots from Dale Jarrett's car in the debut of NASCAR's "In Demand" service. Joyce Julius and Associates Inc. says the shipping company collected almost 2 hours of exposure from Jarrett's in-car cameras during the June 16 Sirius Satellite Radio 400 Winston Cup race at Michigan. The digital service, which was offered for free during the Michigan race, is available for $99 for the remainder of the season. The package offers five in-car channels, the network broadcast and a statistics station.

What better way to celebrate the Top Ten All Time Greatest Driving Songs than by taking a road trip to the beach? In her brand new convertible Chevrolet Corvette, VH1 host Rachel Perry, turns up the tunes and takes off down the highway. True to life, Rachel gets a little turned around and ends up at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park where she convinces NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick to join her on the journey. Kevin and Rachel crank the stereo and head to Ocean Grove, New Jersey. As they cruise to the beach, our hosts make typical road trip stops along the way. Aside from a pit stop at a diner and refueling at a gas station, Kevin and Rachel also take in sights at Springsteen's old stomping grounds, the Stone Pony, in Asbury Park, NJ. Sure to "get your motor runnin'" -- VH1's Top Ten All Time Greatest Driving Songs is the ultimate road trip soundtrack. (Premieres from 12:30-1:30p)

BUCKSHOT PLANNING RETURN?
Buckshot Jones, who started the season as the driver of Petty Enterprises' No. 44 Dodge before losing the Winston Cup ride in April, has posted a very brief note on his Web site that says he will "make a big announcement by the end of June." Jones has told NASCAR Winston Cup Scene that he has a sponsor and has talked with seven or eight teams about driving but won't return unless it's with a competitive team.

Jasper Motorsports signs Said for road courses

Jasper Motorsports announced today that road racing veteran Boris Said will drive the #67 Jasper Engines & Transmissions Ford at both road course races on the 2002 NASCAR Winston Cup Series schedule, beginning with next weekend's event at Sears Point Raceway. Said joins #77 Jasper Ford driver Dave Blaney under the Jasper Motorsports banner.

Much is being made of the current generation gap between NASCAR's 20-somethings and the 40-somethings. But Jon Wood, one of the promising up-and-comers on the truck tour, says that's nothing: last season Wood, at 19, was matched against legendary Herschell McGriff, 74, at California, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Kansas City. McGriff, who started the first Southern 500 and whose six decades of racing alone should make him a Hall of Fame candidate, finally retired earlier this year.
