Donlavey in twilight of long NASCAR career
INSIDE TODAY'S ISSUE: |
By Chris Jenkins
USAToday,June 20, 2002 ![]() Longtime team owner Junie Donlavey says NASCAR should give more TV money to the smaller teams
Junie Donlavey's 52-year run as a NASCAR team owner might be coming to an end, but he hopes to race at Daytona one more time. "If I have to quit this game, I want to do it at where I started," he says. Donlavey's No. 90 team recently lost its sponsor, and he is struggling to find a new one. The team won't be in California for this weekend's Winston Cup race at Sears Point, but Donlavey is trying to put together enough money to field a car July 6 at Daytona. When Donlavey first came to Daytona as a NASCAR car owner, the cars still raced on the beach. "He's been around for so long," says Tommy Baldwin, who got his start as a crew chief with Donlavey's team. "He's been the epitome of NASCAR." Baldwin, who won this year's Daytona 500 with Ward Burton at Bill Davis Racing, is one of perhaps 150 current NASCAR mechanics and crew members who broke in with Donlavey's team. FULL STORY
Gordon gets two shots at victory each week
Rookie Jimmie Johnson flashes across the finish line, beating the established NASCAR hotshots to the checkered flag and bringing a smile to the face of Jeff Gordon. Gordon, happy in defeat? Why not -- he owns the Johnson's car, and each achievement helps convince Gordon he was right when he chose his driver. "He's the whole package," Gordon said. "There's a lot of guys that can drive the cars, but he's got a lot more going for him than that." Johnson, a 26-year-old Californian with movie-star looks, is well on his way to breaking Tony Stewart's records for a first-year Winston Cup driver. He has two wins in less than a half-season and is tied with his boss for second in points as the circuit moves to Sonoma, Calif., for Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350

Wins, top-fives and top-10s are the most prevelant numbers discussed among NASCAR teams, analysts and fans. And then there are streaks, another barometer to indicate who's hot and who's not. Unfortunately, the nature of the beast in NASCAR is most streaks are predicated on who's not hot, such as drivers who haven't won in 10 or 20 or more races. Look at defending Winston Cup champion Jeff Gordon, who has gone winless in 23 starts heading into Sunday's Dodge/Save Mart 350 at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. With consecutive wins there in 1998, '99 and 2000, Gordon has a great chance to snap his 0-for-23 streak Sunday in California's wine country.
Other drivers are suffering through lengthy winless periods, as well. Ricky Rudd, who snapped an 88-race winless skein a year ago at Pocono, Pa., has gone 25 races since his last win, last September at Richmond, Va. Last year's rookie of the year, Kevin Harvick, has gone 32 starts without a win.

Focusing on one role has re-energized Elliott AP June 20, 2002
"You don't have enough time for me to explain how different things are," Elliott said. "I don't worry about who's sick, who's out, who's fixing to quit, where my next sponsor dollar is coming from. "Instead, I worry about the car, then I go back to the motorhome and spend time with my family. I love it this way and I don't never, ever want to own one of these teams again." There's a different Bill Elliott on the Winston Cup circuit these days -- one who stands inside his hauler, peering out through the doors as he watches the world go by. He laughs and jokes and waits for 6-year-old Chase to come by so he can share a little of what he does with his only son. For years it was all business for "Awesome Bill from Dawsonville," a blue-collar racer from Georgia known for winning one championship, losing another on the final race of the 1992 season, and being voted the Most Popular Driver award a record 15 times. That's the way it had to be. After winning his only championship in 1988, then finishing second in 1992 when Alan Kulwicki beat him by 10 points -- the closest points race in NASCAR history -- Elliott decided to launch his own race team in 1995. It was never what he bargained for. There was so much to do on the business side, so many marketing requests and so many personnel issues, he found that his focus was never on racing the car. In hindsight, he said he "sold his soul" to become his own boss. FULL STORY Gaston Gazette, June 20, 2002
A 24th-place finish at Michigan only extenuated Bobby Labonte’s misery. The 2000 Winston Cup champion has only failed to finish two of the season’s 15 races, but apart from a victory at Martinsville, his Pontiac has struggled. "This season has been a major disappointment and today was just an extension of that," Labonte said after the race. "I know we are still capable of running up front, but I am just not sure what it’s going to take." A NASCAR rules change before the Sirius 400 was not immediately helpful to Labonte’s struggling team. "We’re glad NASCAR gave us something regarding the rules change," said Labonte, "but it is not going to be the ‘fix-all’ for our problems. ... I think it is going to help us overall in the long run, but we have a lot of other things we are working on within our own house (at Joe Gibbs Racing), and we have to address those things as well. |

Mission resumed ESPN.com, June 20 2002
Johnny Benson had his most successful year last year, finishing 11th in the points after proclaiming before the season that he would end up in the top six. Although he fell five spots short of that goal, it was a season to celebrate. And then there would be this year, a year to build upon last year's success. The year that, perhaps, would see the end of his Winston Cup winless streak. But not even a third of the way through -- crash! -- he tore himself up in a wreck. He was out of his No. 10 Pontiac starting with the race at Richmond, Va., stuck on the sidelines and waiting for his body to heal. "It's the most frustrating thing in the world," he said a couple of weeks ago, while resting his battered body. "I want to be in the car. ... Last year was great. We really raised the bar. This year, I had some big goals for myself." Benson was mired in the standings and had just begun to get things on track, he said, starting to climb his way back up in the points. After the race in Fontana, Calif., he was 27th in the standings, but he lost the little bit of momentum he began to muster when he injured himself. FULL STORY
My Three Sons at Milwaukee
Jim Sauter will drive a Richard Childress Racing entry in the GNC Live Well 250 at The Milwaukee Mile on June 30, joining sons Jay, Tim and Johnny in the race. It’s the first time a father and three of his sons have raced each other in a major NASCAR event. Jim will drive the No. 29 Rockwell Automation/Advance Chevrolet as a teammate to Jay and Johnny. Tim drives the No. 19 for Alec Pinsonneault. “I’m just happy to be racing with Rockwell Automation and Advance for Richard Childress Racing, especially against my sons,” Jim Sauter said. “I’ve raced against Jay and Tim before, so Johnny is going to be the new guy on the block. I don’t know who my stiffest competition among the boys will be, but I’m going to be pretty good competition for them.” The elder Sauter – a veteran of the Wisconsin short tracks – has driven in numerous Winston Cup races before, but this will be his fourth Busch Series start. His last Busch race was at Myrtle Beach in 1997. He tested an RCR car this week to re-acclimated himself to a NASCAR stock car. “We tested up at Milwaukee Monday and Tuesday, and Jay was quicker,” Jim Sauter said. “But I don’t know if that was because of the set of tires or just me being a little lazy on the wheel. But I stay very consistent and what I always look for is consistency |
Fellows set to battle NASCAR regulars at Sears Point
Fellows, who leads the GTS standings of the American Le Mans Series after wins in the first two races of the 2002 season, is frequently called upon by team owners in NASCAR's top series because of his prowess on road courses. In "one-off" appearances in infrequent NASCAR races on road circuits, he has won in both the NASCAR Busch Grand National and Craftsman Truck Series, but has never won a Winston Cup race.
