Gordon says he holds no grudge against Harvick

When last seen out in wine country, Robby Gordon and Kevin Harvick were a bit snappish at each other after watching Tony Stewart spraying the champagne in victory lane last June. Gordon was hot at Harvick for a late-race bump that cost Gordon the race. Harvick was a lap down at the time trying to get back on the lead lap. Harvick retorted that Gordon should have moved over and let him go. Stewart took advantage of that bickering between the future teammates, passed both, and sprinted away.
But they're all keeping it fairly low-keyed. After all, everyone at Richard Childress Racing is struggling, and they all need to focus on improving. "Kevin is my teammate now, and we're going to have to work together," Gordon said. "I have no grudge against him. I don't see a problem there. "We had Watkins Glen covered a few months later, until that TV box blew up. We could have very easily won three races last year, but we wound up winning only one. So I'm not too concerned about what happened at Sears Point last year." At the moment of decision last June, Gordon was more concerned with the hard-running Stewart, right on their tail. Gordon felt that since he'd be joining Richard Childress' team officially in just a few more weeks, that Harvick would be willing to play bodyguard for him, much as Michael Waltrip has played for Dale Earnhardt Jr. . Every time the NASCAR Winston Cup Series rolls into one of its two road-course races, a crop of experience road racers always appear to take stock-car seats. That happens again this weekend at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. But one of the road racers is also an experience stock-car driver. Jerry Nadeau has one Winston Cup victory in his career, scored at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 2000. He’s been out of a job since being released from his Hendrick Motorsports ride, but Nadeau will be back for the Dodge/Save Mart 350 this weekend.

Tony Stewart has added a race to his July Daytona weekend. Stewart will not only drive his No. 20 Pontiac in the July 6 Pepsi 400 Winston Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway, but he has also signed up to drive the No. 2 Judd-powered Crawford with road racing veteran Elliott Forbes-Robinson in the Rolex Sports Car Series Jani-King Paul Revere 250.
The Jani-King Paul Revere 250 will begin shortly after the conclusion of Winston Cup qualifying on July 4. |
From the Infield: Commentary A&J Racing June 17, 2002
Let me explain. We all know that there was a time that NASCAR stock-car racing was a purely southern’, good-old boy, affair, whose fans rooted for men with names like “Fireball” and “Tiny” and “Junior” (Johnson). These men took cars and without too much done to them, went to race tracks all across the South and banged the hell out of each other for a few dollars every week and the joy of simply racing each other. A southern sport through and through. This was evidenced by the fact that one of the biggest events back then was the “Southern’ 500” at Darlington, an event which had as it ‘s mascot a Confederate Soldier waving a Rebel flag. These men, the pioneers of the sport, were Southern born and bred and even the mere thought of racing anywhere outside of the South was heresy.(although NASCAR did try a race at Chicago’s’ “Soldier Field” once and notice I said “once”). The Lowe’s (Charlotte as it will always be known to some) Motor Speedway was one of those early tracks and in the, what was at that time the very center, of the stock car auto racing world. But the times they were a changin’ and NASCAR began to try and shed this “good old boy” mode in the 1980’s in an attempt to make NASCAR stock car racing less of a southern sport and more of a mainstream American sport. And in that they’ve largely succeeded. Today we have drivers with names like, “Ryan”, another “Johnson”, this time “Jimmie” and Gordon, two as a matter of fact as well as Stewart and Harvick and this past Sundays winner, Kenseth. Most of these drivers aren’t from the South, they’re California, Indiana, New York the mid-west, one even holds a degree in engineering, most have been champions in other racing series and none speak with a ‘drawl. The tracks that NASCAR runs on have changed too. NASCAR tracks can now be found from California to New Hampshire, the southern tip of Florida to Kansas. And as NASCAR has evolved so has it’s fan base. The head honchos in Daytona Beach make no bones about it: They want their sport to be as big the NFL, the NBA, and major league baseball. In order to do this, NASCAR has to emulate what some of the other major league sports have done so successfully: Muti-million dollar network TV contracts. Nationwide merchandising of it's products, so on. And one thing that the other major league sports do that NASCAR doesn't; they have their all-star events in a different city every year. The Super Bowl, The NBA All-Star game, NHL, all these major league sports have different locations each year as a way to bring national exposure to all the markets across the country. And NASCAR will do the same with "The Winston", eventually. . To do otherwise would be a “two steps forward, one step back” mentality and the top brass at NASCAR aren't that dumb. Now of course all the folks in North Carolina will be, and are, upset over the move. And I understand that it's great for the teams to be close to home for a few weeks, but just as NASCAR as shaken off the past, we will all just have to get used to the fact that "The Winston" will rotate around the tracks every year. In order for this sport to truly reach major league status it will have to. And while Tarheels will say that the Daytona 500 is our “Super BowL, the NFL’s Super Bowl is between league champions, used to crown a World champion, the teams having won their way to the top, so in that sense it’s really a “non-points “event so to speak, just like the “Winston”. Don’t the other markets, those loyal to the sport deserve some of the attention and revenue that comes along with hosting the “Winston”? New Hampshire, Bristol, Pocono have long supported NASCAR and I’m sure they’d be eager to host an All-Star event.. Right now the weekend before the 600 makes it nice and convenient for the teams, Lord knows they deserve the break from traveling. But once the rotation begins, NASCAR will need to find a way to fit in an All-Star event. Perhaps it could be held during the week, "prime-time" of course, before the event to be held at the track where it is being staged. Like on the Thursday night at Bristol, before the Sunday race at the same track. Qualify the night before, race on Thursday. Or better yet, have the Bristol race on Saturday night like now, but move the regular event normally held on Sunday to another day during the week, this is something that NASCAR has talked about doing, having an event during the week (Monday night to be exact) instead of Sunday. The teams would already be there for the event so this would eliminate the need for extra travel. I know the teams enjoy being "home" so to speak at Lowes, being able to invite friends and family to the track, but there are two events held there each year now so at least that opportunity won't go away. And as for the crews, the spotlight during the "Winston" need no shift away from them. They deserve the cheers and adulation they get every year. So why doesn't NASCAR consider having the Union 76 World Pit Crew competition held in conjunction with the "Winston". Like the different events the NBA holds during it’s All-Star weekend every year. Wouldn't that make perfect sense as well? There are a lot of things that NASCAR could do, but one thing is for certain, very soon they will announce that the Winston will began to rotate. And that will make perfect sense. |

Childress, Gordon Say RCR Ship is on Steady Course
On the occasion of the weekly Winston teleconference, car owner Richard Childress and driver Robby Gordon put on nice faces and offered at least partial clarification of rumors which have grown around the struggling RCR organization this season.
Childress, who won six championships with Dale Earnhardt in 15 years, and Gordon seem to agree that the two will re-sign for next year, continuing a trend of one-year contracts.
"As far as I'm concerned, I'd like to see Robby around for a long, long time," the owner said. "Right now, Robby Gordon is a lot better than the team and the cars we're giving him. We've got a great team, but we've just got to figure out what we've got to do to get these cars working.
"I'm very pleased with what he's done, I'm just not as happy with what we've been able to do with our cars. If we get him the right equipment, he'll be winning races."
Childress said all three teams have begun to re-body cars, with the intent of introducing new shapes at the Brickyard 400 in August, if not before.
"We ran a brand new car Sunday [at Michigan] that has a body style that
really showed some good promise," he said. "We're going to have one for Robby to test at Indy. Jeff Green will have one to test at Indy. We're just starting to cut bodies off to try to do this other one if it works good for Indy.
"We're going to be testing there in a couple of weeks. Then we'll have a better direction. But we did see some positive things with that car, and it's going back to the wind tunnel this week. That's what we've got to work on." FULL STORY

Contact, controversy bring out best, not worst, in Biffle June 19 2002
Todd Bodine and Biffle battled for the win on the final lap in "Days of Thunder" fashion, slamming into each other as they came door-to-door off the final turn. Just before the finish line, Biffle started to spin and Bodine slipped under the checkered flag a few feet ahead for the win. Your first reaction was to wait on the pit crews to start fighting or watch to see if Biffle wanted to run Bodine down and slam him into the wall. But when the television cameras got to him, Biffle said he and Bodine were just racing and if anybody had initiated the contact he did. Maybe he was putting on a front for the cameras, but if he was, Biffle's a good actor. It was good, hard racing and the kind of stuff NASCAR needs a whole lot more. FULL STORY
Here Comes Mr. Gordon
So, go ahead and make fun of Jeff Gordon. Crack jokes about his pending divorce. Laugh at him about not being able to win like Jimmie Johnson. Pick on him for silly mistakes at Bristol and Pocono. But, remember, Gordon might be the guy laughing the most at the NASCAR Winston Cup Awards Banquet in New York City in December. After rallying to finish fifth in Sunday’ Sirius Satellite Radio 400 at Michigan International Speedway, Gordon is 110 points out of the Winston Cup points lead. He’s tied with Johnson as both try to chase down Sterling Marlin. There’s a long way to go in the 2002 season, and Gordon certainly has the credentials. He’s the defending Winston Cup champ, has won the title four times, and his team is clearly as deep and talented as any in the garage. If anyone is a favorite to win this year’s championship, wouldn’t it be Gordon? |
Petree to Fords next season
Andy Petree, for so long a loyal Chevy man, now finds himself having to switch to Fords apparently next season, at the behest of soon-to-be new business partner Jerry Jones. But GM executives say they're not putting Petree on the hot seat because they understand his predicament.
