Reutimann Feels Pressure Of Replacing Dale Jarrett At Martinsville Speedway
CSD Staff, March 20

David Reutimann understands the pressure of racing. He felt it heavy on his shoulders for more than a decade as he ran his own cars on short tracks throughout the Southeast, eking out a living race to race.

In this photo provided by HHP Images, NASCAR driver Dale Jarrett poses with the No. 44 UPS Toyota Camry he will drive in the Sprint All-Star Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., in what will be his final race, during a news conference at the track Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

But he's probably never experienced the pressure that's in store for him when he crawls through the window of the UPS Toyota for the Goody's Cool Orange 500 on March 30. That day he officially takes over for Dale Jarrett.

"There's always a certain amount of pressure no matter what you drive, but to step in that 44 car, knowing UPS and Dale Jarrett were instrumental in getting me behind the wheel of that car, you don't want to go out there and do anything stupid," said Reutimann. "It's a pretty daunting process. But hey, I'm looking forward to the opportunity."

Reutimann began the season in the Aaron's Toyota, the same car he drove for Michael Waltrip Racing a year ago, but the plan was already in place for him to move into Jarrett's seat when the veteran stepped aside after Bristol. Rookie Michael McDowell will fill the opening left by Reutimann in the Aaron's Toyota.

"Driving the 44 car …that's a huge deal," said Reutimann. "There's always that uncertainty in racing and you're never going to know what's going to happen next, so this is something I could have never envisioned happening.

"I'm happy to be associated with UPS and be part of their program, but it still really bums me out that Dale Jarrett's stepping away from driving full time because he's done a lot for me.

"As happy as I want to be about having UPS as a sponsor and the relationship I have with them, I'm sad because he's not going to be over in that trailer for me to run over and ask a bunch of stupid questions which he always answered. He's always taken time for me."

And Reutimann admits, Martinsville could be one of the tracks he could still use a few of Jarrett's pointers. He finished 17th in last fall's Cup race at the tough half-mile track and was 33rd in last year's Goody's Cool Orange 500.

"Martinsville is, quite honestly a race track I've never done very well at and so hopefully we're going to change that," said Reutimann, who had one top-15 finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at Martinsville. "It's a tough place and you have to have a really good car and things have to go your way. "

NASCAR Drivers Give March Madness Predictions
CSD Staff, March 20

Although the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season is still young, the first off-week of the year comes at a perfect time for some drivers – it’s March Madness time, a rite of spring for many in the garage.

With many drivers making their homes in North Carolina, it’s no coincidence that the UNC Tar Heels were the overwhelming favorite to win the championship among the group.

Tony Raines to enter Martinsville
CSD Staff, March 20

MEMPHIS, TN -- EM Motorsports owner John Carter announced Wednesday that Tony Raines would pilot the teams Dodge Charger in the Goody's Cool Orange 500 on March 30, at Martinsville Speedway.

Raines is a veteran of six NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starts at Martinsville. Raines' best finish at the historic half-mile track was a 10th place finish in last October's Subway 500. Raines qualifies well at the track with an average starting position of 17.3 in his 6 races.

Raines and Hall of Fame Racing parted ways in 2007. At HOF Racing Raines competed in 63 Sprint Cup Series events during two seasons. During his career, Raines has competed in 117 Sprint Cup Series races with 3 Top-Tens.

Fitz Motorsports scales back operations
CSD Staff, March 20

MOORESVILLE, N.C. -- Fitz Motorsports No. 36 NASCAR Nationwide Series team will temporarily slow operations, effective immediately. Kenny Wallace drove the car in the first five Nationwide Series events this season. A number of different factors led to the decision.

"Sponsor money for the No. 36 Dodge Charger was based on distribution of Shark Energy Drink," said team owner Armando Fitz. "While the initial response was terrific, it's taking longer than anticipated to generate enough funding to run the No. 36 car competitively in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

No Points Swap For Petty Enterprises
CSD Staff, March 20

Petty Enterprises officials will not ask NASCAR to approve a point’s swap between drivers Bobby Labonte and Kyle Petty.

The move will force Petty to qualify based on speed for the March 30 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway.

Tony Stewart Gets Waxed
CSD Staff, March 19

Tuesday on "Tony Stewart Live", Stewart and Kevin Harvick discussed their run-in in the final laps of Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway. While running second and third, Harvick's and Stewart's cars came together, spinning Stewart out and knocking him back to a 14th place finish. Immediately after the accident, words were exchanged between spotters for the No. 20 and No. 29 teams.
