SWAP MEET?
Owner point swaps are unfair
By Reid Spencer, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 18

There are dinosaurs in the NASCAR Sprint Cup garage.

Kevin Harvick credits crew chief Todd Berrier with a good call for a late pit and admits to losing control of his car and getting into Tony Stewart

And like the ungainly beasts from past millennia, they are rushing headlong toward extinction.

The "ice age" that threatens to wipe out NASCAR's dinosaurs -- single-car teams -- is a combination of the top-35 qualifying rule and NASCAR's inclination to let multicar team owners play the shell game with the owner points that accrue to their cars.

Even though there's ample precedent for owner point swaps, it's time put this nonsense to an end.

Why? Because the surest way to ensure the demise of single-car teams is to keep seeding the top 35 with drivers who don't deserve to be there.

After Sunday's Food City 500 at Bristol, NASCAR's second season kicks in. Instead of using the year-end 2007 owner points to determine the top 35 drivers locked into the starting field for the next race (in this case, the March 30 Goody's Cool Orange 500 at Martinsville Speedway), owner points accumulated in the first five races of 2008 now govern.

With that in mind, there's already talk of additional owner point manipulation.

You'll recall that 2004 Cup champion Kurt Busch agreed to give the 2007 owner points he earned in his No. 2 Penske Dodge to rookie teammate Sam Hornish Jr. NASCAR acquiesced to the transaction. Busch had insurance, a provisional starting spot that goes to the most recent past champion who's 1) not in the top 35 in owner points, and 2) not otherwise in the field on speed.

Accordingly, Busch knew he would start each of the first five races of 2008. So did Hornish.

In the first five races of 2008, Busch garnered enough owner points to elevate the No. 2 Dodge to 10th in the standings. Despite starting every race, Hornish's No. 77 Dodge is 35th in owner points, four ahead of the No. 26 Roush Fenway Ford of Jamie McMurray.

CSD Staff, March 18

Pilot George Trail, 68, and passenger Barry Bevan, 65, both from Ontario Canada, reside in Lake Worth during winter months. Both men died at about 5:30 a.m. when the aircraft slammed into the ground near Lake Panasoffkee about 30 miles east of Orlando.

Sumter County Sheriff's Capt. Gary Brannen said the plane left Lake Worth at about 4:30 a.m. destined for Virginia. Trail and Bevan were scheduled to pick up Trail's son before continuing on to Bristol Tennessee.

LifeLock to sponsor June Cup race at Michigan
By Michael Smith, Sporting News NASCAR Wire Service, March 18

LifeLock, a company that protects against identity theft, has struck a three-year deal to title sponsor the June Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

The title sponsorship continues LifeLock's growing presence in NASCAR, which previously included title sponsorship of the 2007 Sprint Cup race at Kansas Speedway and a variety of team deals with Rusty Wallace's Nationwide Series outfit, McClure Motorsports and BAM Racing.

Bristol Ratings Up
CSD Staff, March 18

Fox's broadcast of Sunday's Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup race earned an overnight Nielsen Media Research rating of 5.0 and an 11 market share.

The rating is 2 percent higher than the 4.9/11 the race earned overnight for Fox in 2007.

The Top 35, The Bubble Has Burst
CSD Staff, March 18

Five races are in the books. That means the weekly guaranteed starting spots to the top 35 teams in car owner points are based on current standings.

There are some surprises, regarding those on the outside looking in.

1973: David Pearson leads 491 of 492 laps of the Carolina 500 at Rockingham to record his first of 11 victories in 1973. What makes Pearson's season all the more remarkable is that he enters only 18 of 28 races. He finishes with 14 top fives. His other four finishes are 22, 33, 31 and 36 -- all DNFs.
